Modder turns Game Boy Pocket into dedicated mirrorless camera

An amazing hardware mod for niche Gameboy photography

July 12, 2022 12:00 PM

A crafty Game Boy Camera modder has turned a Game Boy Pocket into a dedicated camera.

Christopher Graves built the console a new shell, custom screen, and a new lens mount to allow for better optics than came with the standard 1998 Game Boy Camera.

The device can even still play Game Boy games, like Pokémon Red, saying on Twitter that it was "Awkward for gaming, but doable. Probably best with an RPG or something turn-based like Pokémon."

While the 128×128 pixel CMOS sensor can only capture 4 shade grayscale images, a dedicated community has sprung up for the Game Boy Camera photography.

For me it was the very first digital camera I ever owned, so it holds a special place in my heart.

Check out some of the photos of the Game Boy Camera M taken by Christopher below, and then head to gameboycamera.com for more of their work.
